About Ghetto Classics

Welcome to Ghetto Classics, a pioneering arts education organization nestled in the heart of Korogocho. For over a decade, we have been instrumental in shaping the lives of more than 500 children and youth through the power of music education.

In our 12-year journey, we've witnessed the incredible growth of our young musicians, who have become the pride of Korogocho. They have also showcased their talents in performances and festivals, both locally in Kenya and on international stages. Some of our remarkable graduates are now pursuing their passion at prestigious conservatories such as the Birmingham Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, Alabama State University, and Prague Conservatory.

In 2019, we expanded our artistic horizons by introducing Ghetto Classics Dance. This exciting dance program operates alongside our renowned music program, fostering an environment where students from both disciplines share spaces, creating opportunities for inspiring multidisciplinary collaborations.

At Ghetto Classics, we believe in more than just teaching music and dance. We cultivate a transformative process where dancers and musicians learn to connect, support, and create together. This uniquely human journey not only encourages perseverance but also culminates in those magical moments when art is born.

Meet the Team behind the Fundraiser

Joanna Priwieziencew, a seasoned alumna of the State Ballet School of Warsaw, has danced on prestigious global stages and collaborated with renowned companies worldwide. Beyond her dance career, she passionately advocates arts education and collaboration. Joanna co-created the opera "Fidelio" in Gdansk, fostering unity among musicians from European countries. Notably, she orchestrated Kenya's first live orchestra for "The Nutcracker" in 2018.

As the Head of the Ghetto Classics Dance program in Nairobi since 2019, Joanna empowers youth through dance. Joanna now champions fundraising for the Ghetto Classics Dance program, ensuring its continued success and impact.

David Fernandez is an award-winning contemporary choreographer dance filmmaker and master teacher from NYC. As the new resident Choreographer/Ballet Master, David is thrilled to join the Ghetto Classics Dance. He looks forward to teaching and creating new works for the students at Korogocho.

Hello Palate, founded by Michelle Pesce, is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, educator, and health enthusiast who uses a bio-individual approach to functional, holistic nutrition. She joined Joanna in 2020 to augment the dance school's education through nutrition using local food and quarterly lesson plans.

Each quarter, the dancers come back with insightful and meaningful questions about their health. Michelle is "constantly learning along with these dancers how understanding our bodies can support us emotionally and physically in finding our inner rhythms to wellness. In the past three years, their nutritional therapy education focused on the abundance of their ancestral foods and rediscovered the health benefits of organic red palm oil sustainable produced in their country, using old-world fermentation to prepare yogurt and seeing the abundance of local fruit to enjoy, fish and ugali (cornmeal suitable to breakfast porridge).
