Support Hannah's Fight Against Thyroid Cancer

In February 2024, our incredibly hardworking, borderline-genius, beautiful and compassionate friend Hannah Smith was unexpectedly diagnosed with metastatic papillary thyroid cancer. Hannah, at only 27 years old, is a 3rd year medical student at Oregon Health and Science University and pursuing a residency in otolaryngology, has numerous scientific projects and publications under her belt, and is a signed model in her (albeit very limited) free time. Her passion and drive to make the world a better place is unmatched, and this new battle with cancer has only further illuminated her strength and resilience in the face of incredible difficulties.

While Hannah will continue to beat her condition, cancer is an impossibly difficult road. Since her diagnosis, she has undergone dozens of further testing and medical procedures, underwent surgery to have her thyroid entirely removed, and will soon be tackling a number of rounds of radioactive iodine treatment. Additionally, she has decided to take a medical leave of absence from medical school to prioritize her health and well being at this time. Due to the structure of our current health systems, this means she has also been denied insurance coverage of many of her medically necessary tests and procedures. Because of medical school policies, she is also no longer able to receive federal student loans or financial support from the medical school as she recovers.
