Support Healing and Justice for CRSV Survivors

As we continue our tireless efforts to address the devastating impact of conflict-related sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it is with a profound sense of urgency and determination that I write to you today. For far too long, the survivors of these heinous crimes have been denied the justice and closure they deserve. Too often, their voices have been silenced, their suffering overlooked, and their perpetrators allowed to roam free with impunity.
At Panzi Hospital, we have witnessed firsthand the harrowing experiences of survivors who have endured unimaginable trauma at the hands of armed groups and perpetrators of sexual violence. Every day, we strive to provide comprehensive care and support to these courageous individuals, addressing their physical, psychological, and social needs with unwavering compassion and dedication.
Yet, amidst our efforts to heal the wounds of the body and soul, there remains a critical missing piece in the pursuit of justice and accountability: forensic evidence. For too long, the absence of robust forensic capabilities has hindered our ability to bring perpetrators to justice and provide closure to survivors. Without the means to collect, analyze, and preserve DNA evidence, countless perpetrators continue to evade accountability, perpetuating cycles of violence and impunity.
That is why I am deeply honored to announce a groundbreaking partnership between Panzi Hospital, DNAforAfrica, and the University of Cape Town (UCT), aimed at establishing a pioneering DNA profiling station at the Observatory Forensic Pathology Institute (OFPI) Molecular Laboratory in Cape Town, South Africa. This initiative marks a pivotal step forward in our collective efforts to confront the scourge of sexual violence and advance the cause of justice for survivors in the DRC and beyond.
Through this pilot research project, we seek to demonstrate the indispensable value of DNA analysis in cases of conflict-related sexual violence, shedding light on the perpetrators responsible for these crimes and providing irrefutable evidence to support prosecutions. Moreover, by enhancing the forensic nursing staff's proficiency in obtaining biological samples and securing consent from survivors, we aim to ensure the provision of high-quality evidence for research purposes, thus contributing to the broader knowledge base on conflict-related sexual violence.
In the long term, our vision extends beyond the confines of this pilot project. We aspire to empower institutions in conflict-affected areas, like Panzi Hospital, to establish their own forensic DNA capabilities, thereby strengthening local capacities for justice and accountability. Together, we can turn the tide against impunity, ushering in a new era of accountability, healing, and hope for survivors of sexual violence in the DRC and beyond.
With gratitude for your unwavering commitment to this vital cause, let us join hands and hearts in solidarity as we embark on this transformative journey together.
Sincerely,
Dr. Denis Mukwege
