On April 26, 2025, multiple people were killed and injured at the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, when a man drove his SUV at high speed into the crowds of people who were enjoying themselves at the festival.
Helgi Bjarnason (27 years old) was with his mother Maria Victoria (Vicky) Bjarnason, who was visiting him from the Philippines. They were also with one of Helgi’s friends. Helgi was holding his mother’s hand and attempted to pull her away from the car, but unfortunately she was ripped away from him and tragically killed. Helgi was also hit by the car and sustained injuries including a broken leg, for which he was rushed to hospital for surgery. Helgi’s friend was also hit by the car and tragically killed.
Vicky was visiting her sons in Vancouver from the Philippines. She loved her sons more than the world. They had just celebrated Helgi’s birthday the night before the tragic incident. Vicky was scheduled to fly back to the Philippines just days later on April 29.
This is an unimaginable loss for her sons, who no longer have any parents in their lives. Helgi and his brother, Thor Bjarnason (28 years old), are grieving this immense loss. They wish to take their mother back home to the Philippines for a proper memorial service where she can lay to rest surrounded by her family.
Nothing can truly ease the grief and trauma that Helgi, Thor, and their family are experiencing. Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help cover funeral expenses and to take Vicky back home to the Philippines, as well as to help ease the financial burden on Helgi and Thor during this tragic time.
The photo of Helgi (on the left) and Vicky (on the right) was taken shortly before the tragic incident.
