Support First Afghan Woman to Stand on Top of the World

My name is Freshta Ibrahimi and I want to become the first woman from Afghanistan to stand on top of the world by climbing Mount Everest. As a refugee living in the UK, I believe that what truly brings people together is our strength and will to create meaningful change.

I want to climb the world’s tallest mountain for the women of Afghanistan who can't - because their basic rights have been taken away by the Taliban. The climb will be tough, but it’s nothing compared to the daily battles of those brave women.

Being the first woman from Afghanistan to summit Mount Everest will be the start of a bigger project, through which I hope to inspire women around the world to stand up for their rights. By forming a community of like-minded people, we know we can break through barriers of religion, gender, race, and the chains of shame imposed on so many of us.

Back in Afghanistan, when I embarked on climbing expeditions, it was in order to feel safe, because every mountain took me further away from the threat of terrorist attacks. After I became a refugee in the UK, my love for nature helped me combat loneliness and feel at home in a new country.

I have experience with high altitude mountaineering since 2015, including submitting 5,000 metre summits and 6,0000 metres summit in Afghanistan, and summit of Lobuche East (6119m) in 2023. Over the next 8 months, I will continue to refine my technical skills and build my endurance in the build up to Everest.
