Rebuilding Lives While Restoring Ecosystems
Over 186,000 people are currently unhoused in California—a heartbreaking 8% increase from 2022. Each day, countless individuals face impossible choices between food, shelter, dignity, and survival.
At HEVI (Houseless Environmental Volunteers Initiative), we believe in empowering unhoused individuals to rebuild their lives while making a positive impact on the environment. Through a partnership with Santa Clara County’s Our City Forest, HEVI offers unhoused individuals a stipend of $15/hour to work alongside high school volunteers. Together, we restore local ecosystems by planting trees, pruning weeds, and spreading mulch.
But HEVI is about more than just wages. Participants also gain:
- Skill-building opportunities
- Letters of recommendation
- Pathways to long-term employment
What Our Participants Are Saying:
- “I felt respected working with the high school volunteers.”
- “I’m proud to serve my community with my hard work.”
- “I’m happy to earn income while contributing to something meaningful.”
To Date, HEVI Has:
- Planted over 2,000 trees in San Jose
- Provided 1,000+ hours of employment to the unhoused
- Helped 50+ individuals secure full-time employment
The demand for this program is growing, with more unhoused individuals eager to join and make a difference.
