This week Howard Brown Health terminated Marbella Guzman, a Medical Assistant at the 47th street clinic, for missing work to care for her five children, including when her children tested positive with Covid-19.
As a result of this abrupt decision by Howard Brown Health, Marbella is struggling to keep up with costs of living for her family such as rent, food, and other essential bills.
Marbella is an incredibly dedicated parent and employee, as well as a strong supporter of the current unionizing effort at Howard Brown. Before being terminated, Marbella made it clear that she intended to help staff organize in the hopes of facilitating an environment where Howard Brown employees are able to provide consistent, trauma informed care, while being able to still be able to support themselves and their families. Now, Howard Brown Health Workers United and Marbella are working together to challenge this unjust termination in order to get Marbella's job back.
We do not feel that terminating an employee for trying to take care of her ailing children is in line with the values that Howard Brown Health claims to prioritize. Please consider donating to help provide direct support to Marbella and her family during this incredibly difficult time.
