Support Hunkpati Youth Riders' Cultural Journey
Donation protected
Hunkpati youth riders are for kids who want to learn horsemanship and the Dakota culture. We use equine therapy to help our young people heal and be good relatives to one another, to the two legged and four legged, and all of creation. This year's ride will cover the original boundaries of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribal Reservation, starting in Fort Thompson, SD on July 13th. We'll head to Big Bend district and camp, followed by a ride to Pierre and then on to Holabird. Day 4, we'll set off to Miller then head to Gan Valley and Pukwana. We'll finish by riding back to Fort Thompson on Day 7.
The youth riders will learn how to tend to and communicate with the horse. There will be stories of the ancestors and kids will set up and sleep in tipi for all 6 days of camping. Our hope is that at the end of the ride, the kids will have a stronger relationship to the horse to help them cope through difficult times as well as a deeper understanding of their Dakota culture.
