This evening will be a celebration of the birth of OHM Productions.
OHM Productions became a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Theater company in May, 2021, during the unprecedented and difficult early days of the Covid-19 pandemic when little was known about our future as artists.
I started OHM as a way to bring actors together, but more importantly, to explore the intersection of theater and mindfulness. I asked myself: Could they be used together in a cohesive and productive way? How could mindfulness practices be incorporated during rehearsals and discussion around the text in a way that was not purely intellectual, but also visceral?
The greatest question became: Can a cast go more deeply into their characters and gain greater trust of each other by incorporating healing and somatic work in the rehearsal process? The answer soon revealed itself to be a YES.
I hadn't done anything like this before, but nonetheless, I asked six very industrious and talented actors if they would like to explore text with me, in this way. We started meeting every Tuesday night on Zoom . I asked them to participate in breathing exercises, meditation, shaking and visualizations. Directing, I incorporated improvising text and the character interview, powerful and irreplaceable tools I had learned from Terry Knickerbocker (William Esper Studio) and Wynn Handman. And with that, a theater company was born.
We chose Hurlyburly, by David Rabe, as our first play. As some of you may know, OHM Productions and the Hurlyburly cast worked incredibly hard on fundraising and exploring Hurlyburly, but our rights to the play were revoked shortly before the scheduled performance, due to circumstances beyond our control.
Though we sadly could not see the Off-Broadway run to its completion, we are very pleased to bring this OHM Productions showcase of recent work to you on Sunday night, February 6th at 7PM, as a way to celebrate our tremendous cast, and the birth of OHM Productions. This fundraising evening is about planting seeds for future projects to come.
If you are able, we would be so grateful if you could donate to OHM to bring a new fully-realized play to the stage in the near future (title to be determined). No donation amount is too small!
