Support IDPs in Shire, Tigray
Donation protected
My name is Danayit, a diaspora Tigrayan living in Canada. I am initiating this Gofundme on behalf of my family who currently reside in Shire, after being ethnically cleansed from Humera, Western Tigray.
This fundraiser aims to raise money to support the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Shire, Tigray.
After enduring almost three years of a genocidal war of extermination targeting ethnic Tigrayans, displaced people are now suffering a famine worsened by the lack of international aid. The last shipment from the World Food Program (WFP) arrived in December 2024, over four months ago yet comparatively with the population in desperate need of aid the previous shipments fell considerably short.
Even though the armed conflict has subsided (40% of constitutionally recognized Tigrayan regional territory is still occupied by hostile forces), over one million IDPs cannot return to their homes, this number does not reflect the total number of displaced people with thousands more having fled to neighbouring countries and across seas.
The bloodiest conflict of this century is still claiming victims through the compounded consequences of forced displacement: hunger, lack of access to medical treatment, overcrowding causing unhygienic conditions, lack of institutional support and services etc…
The goal of this fundraiser is to provide immediate relief to the IDPs of Shire, a city that currently hosts the largest amount of displaced people in the region. Working in collaboration with community members on the ground, the funds will be distributed to the most marginalized in the camps. Single and elderly women, many recovering from weaponzied sexual violence during the genocidal war, orphaned children and disabled people. With all of Tigrayan society currently struggling to recover and rebuild, the most marginalized within the community are in need of extra and specialized support and assistance.
Any contribution is appreciated, footage of the distribution of funds and periodical updates on the conditions of recipients will be provided if requested. This is a small step towards increasing the steadfastness of our people, an obligation we in the diaspora must fulfill to honour the sacrifices of our martyrs and heroes who resisted the extermination of our people.
