Support Insider Union workers on strike

OUR STRIKE IS OVER! We've won (and unanimously ratified) an amazing first contract, which you can read about here. Thank you to everyone who has supported us — we're blown away by your generosity and solidarity.

Insider members are now ON STRIKE as of June 2 at midnight. After our one-day walkout in April, six weeks of marathon bargaining, and a supermajority strike authorization vote, management walked away from the table with one hour to go before our deadline without giving us a counter on important issues including the wages we deserve and settling our healthcare ULP.

Going on strike means we are losing our paychecks for the duration of the strike, and while we are proud to stand up for each other and for our contract, many of our members will need additional funds to help cover costs they would otherwise not be able to afford while going without a paycheck.

Members will be able to request funds. Emma LeGault from the bargaining committee will be managing this money and ensuring it goes where it needs to. Though some of us involved are union leaders, the NewsGuild is not authorized to raise money outside of the dues it collects from members, and this fundraiser is not affiliated with the NewsGuild.

No one deserves to face financial hardship for taking action with their coworkers, so to those who are able to contribute, our deepest thanks. We are fired up to settle our healthcare ULP and get the wages we deserve. Solidarity forever.

On Thursday, April 20, Insider proposed laying off 60 members of the Insider Union — a full 20% of our unit.

On Monday, April 24, we walked out.

Insider management has told us there is NO urgent financial need for these layoffs. And after a year and a half of negotiations, they still haven’t reached an agreement with us on a fair contract. This is unacceptable.

Management has threatened to dock our pay for today’s one-day walkout. We don’t know if they’re going to follow through. But we do know some union members may not be able to afford to lose a day’s pay. They shouldn’t have to choose between supporting their colleagues and paying their bills.

This fund will go toward covering a day of missed pay for union members that can’t afford to go without it. If Insider doesn’t end up docking our pay, we’ll save the money for a future Insider Union strike fund. If we don’t go on another strike before we ratify our first contract, we’ll donate it to another labor cause or strike fund.

For those who are able to contribute, our deepest thanks. We are fired up to stop these unnecessary layoffs, get our contract, and do our best to ensure no one has to fear financial hardship for participating in the walkout.
