Support IWDG Mayo Live Stranding Response Team

IWDG needs your support to equip our Live Stranding Network volunteers with PPE, Hi-Vis Jackets, biodegradable branded ribbon (dead animals only), training and an 8x5 ft. box trailer to be kept in Co. Mayo.

Due to its unique geography, gently sloping beaches and tidal ranges, the Mullet Peninsula in North West Mayo is a live stranding hotspot for common dolphins in Ireland. In 2022, the local Mullet peninsula responders assisted a total of 30 dolphins who had live stranded throughout the year.

The local IWDG volunteers and community members are very experienced in managing mass stranding events and will often spend entire days providing supportive care to the dolphins while waiting for tides to come in. If the team can safely relocate beached dolphins to deep water as quickly as possible, thereby minimising the amount of time they spend on land, this will prevent the dolphins condition from deteriorating. The more time an animal spends outside of its natural habitat on land, the less likely the animal is to survive.

The jeep our team were using to transport their equipment, which also sometimes doubled as dolphin transporter, is no longer on the road. This leaves our volunteers without a quick and easy way to move their equipment to a live stranding or move any dolphins which need relocating.

An 8x5 ft. box trailer would permanently store all equipment, thereby speeding up response times as the kit will be loaded ready to go. It will also function as dolphin trailer when animals need to be relocated.
