On the evening of May 15, Jack Shanley was involved in a life-altering car accident. After a gruesome 40 minutes, Jack was freed from his vehicle and brought to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. From there, he was airlifted to Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital to undergo emergency surgery. The initial surgery to stabilize his shattered vertebrae was a success.
As a result of the accident, however, Jack was left with several broken ribs, a collapsed lung and partially severed spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. In the coming weeks, Jack will begin his rehabilitation journey at MarianJoy Rehabilitation Hospital. He will need full time occupational and physical therapy, a wheelchair, home modifications, and an assortment of additional resources to help him adjust to this new normal.
The Shanley family is a force of nature, built with a foundation of love, determination, and strength. Each of the Shanley boys bring a unique dynamic to their clan and it is clear that Jack is their fire. If anyone can learn to walk again, it’s Jack. Time and time again, the Shanley’s have given their heart and soul to the ones that need it most. Now, it’s our time to collectively hold them close as they navigate this new chapter.
