Support Jelani's Semester Abroad in Rome

Hi everyone! My name is Jelani, and I am thrilled to share an exciting opportunity that I have coming up. I am going into my junior year at Holy Cross College, majoring in Business with minors in Spanish and Marketing. This spring, I have the incredible chance to spend a semester studying abroad in Rome, Italy.

I am currently working as the Head of Outside Operations at Morris Park Country Club and have been there for over five years and at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for over a year. Additionally, I have been saving money by detailing golf carts at the country club in my free time. Despite my efforts, the costs associated with living and studying abroad are significant.

This semester abroad will be the second semester of my junior year, and it is a dream come true for me. Not only will it enrich my academic experience, but it will also provide me with invaluable cultural exposure and personal growth. I recently achieved a 4.0 GPA last semester while taking 18 credit hours, a testament to my dedication and self-motivation. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a huge heart and a passion for helping others.

I am passionate about using my education and experiences to make a positive impact on my community. I have many dreams and goals, all saved in my notes app, but one of my biggest dreams is to open a community center for youth. Throughout my last semester I volunteered weekly at La Casa de Amistad (A predominantly Hispanic community center for youth) and this experience truly sharpened my desire to create a safe and supportive space for young people.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am an active member of the First-Generation Club, supporting fellow first-generation college students in their journey. I am also in the process of starting a drama club, following in my high school footsteps where I was the leader and director of all the shows. Furthermore, in high school I served as the co-president of B.R.O.T.H.E.R.S, a predominantly Black male club dedicated to breaking stereotypes through community service, college visits, deep discussions, and seminars.

As a 21st Century Success Fellow, I mentor and help families and students navigate the path to free college education. I believe in giving back and being a role model, especially for the younger generation in my family. Family is incredibly important to me, and I strive to be someone they can look up to and rely on.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Holy Cross thus far, the social life and particularly the smaller classes where teaching is tailored to our needs and where we can build meaningful relationships with other students and professors. I also appreciate the tri-campus community and love attending Notre Dame home games during football season. Between my jobs and extra-curriculars I don’t have much free time, but in my free time I like hanging out with friends and family. I also LOVE to travel, take day trips, and experience new things and God’s beautiful earth; hence my excitement with spending 5 months in a new country. (I’ve even started learning Italian to prep :) )
