My name is Jessica Phoenix Sylvia and I am a community organizer and justice writer. After spending more than 18 years in prison for a domestic violence related crime, I am preparing for release.
As a trans woman of color, the system has not been kind to me. I live under the constant threat of physical and sexual violence in a men's prison. Even so, I have done my best to grow as a human being and have made countless positive contributions.
I earned an A.A. degree in prison and am working towards a BA. I have worked on several projects including The Trans in Prison Justice Project, restorative justice projects for youth, incarceration and homelessness, prisons programs - including LGBTQIA+ and I even led The Gender Identity Justice Campaign in 2021.
You may find my Empowerment Avenue-supported justice writing in publications such as Them, Truthout , Into , Dame , and more!
As I prepare for release, I must make a new home because I have nothing and home no longer exists. I am hoping to get a start on life by raising money to meet the following initial reentry needs: A car, computer, phone, clothes, expenses, (2) medical procedures not covered by insurance, and money to get a place of my own once my transition related healthcare needs are met. My goal is a total of $26,000.
Would you buy me a cup of coffee? If the answer is yes, please consider contributing to a cause that will make a huge difference in my life. I will never forget your love and generosity!
