Support Joey Chavez' Journey to Healing
On September 10, 2020 Joey suffered a hemorrhagic stroke on the right side of his brain. This resulted in a four day stay at UNM Hospital where he was treated and returned home, but without answers as to why the stroke occurred. Over the last nine months, Joey has returned to the hospital four times. Recently, in March, he was transported to St. Vincent with another hemorrhagic stroke, this time on the left side. Joey spent four days in intensive care. Again he returned home with no answers. At the end of May, Joey suffered a series of seizures and was airlifted to UC Health in Denver. He was there for a week, continuing to suffer seizures and suffering from profound aphasia (inability to communicate).
Finally an answer. After a week at the Anschutz Medical Center and dozens of tests, the neurological team gave us the diagnosis. Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. Just a scary as it sounds. The blood vessels in Joey's brain are highly susceptible to leaking and bleeding. There is no treatment to cure this condition, though there are therapies that can lessen the risks. This includes medication to control his blood pressure and his seizures, many follow up tests, speech and occupational therapies, and some lifestyle changes.
Joey has an incredibly positive attitude about his future. However, though we have insurance, the out of pocket expense of all of the tests, emergency transports, hospital stays and travel to get care are mounting rapidly.
I'm asking you to support my husband, Joey Chavez in continuing to get the care that he will continue to need for the foreseeable future. If you are unable to help out financially, we will accept your loving thoughts and your prayers!
