Support John and Café Domo and his museum Dominion Modern : A Community's Heart Needs Our Help
Dear Friends and Supporters,
For a decade, Café Domo stood as more than just a coffee shop—it was the beating heart of our community. Owned and lovingly operated by our dear friend John, the café was a haven where everyone felt welcome. It was a place where friendships blossomed, stories were shared, and connections were made. John worked tirelessly to break down barriers, ensuring that Café Domo was a space where everyone, from all walks of life, could come together and feel a sense of belonging.
However, the past few years have been challenging. The dual impact of COVID-19 and prolonged road construction in the area dealt significant blows to the business. Despite these obstacles, John remained resilient, doing everything possible to keep the café afloat. When the time came to step back, John began negotiating a lease transfer with new tenants, hoping to ensure that Café Domo's legacy would continue.
the heartbroken situation
But in a devastating turn of events, the new tenants went behind John's back, directly negotiating with the landlord. Without warning, the locks were changed, and John was denied access to the café he had nurtured for so long. Adding to the heartbreak, the new tenants have refused to compensate John for the equipment left behind and have cut off all communication. The money will go to him for everything he lost.
The café wasn't just a business; it was also a vital source of support for John's other passion—Dominion Modern, his modern Canadian design museum (dominionmodern.ca). Now, with the abrupt loss of Café Domo, both John and Dominion Modern are facing significant financial and emotional challenges.
We are reaching out to you, our friends, neighbors, and community, to help John in this difficult time. Your support will not only help John recoup some of his losses but will also aid in sustaining Dominion Modern, a cultural treasure that reflects John's commitment to preserving Canadian design history.
