Meet Joseph, a resilient and inspiring individual who has been fighting a relentless battle against sickle cell disease. Joseph's unwavering spirit and determination have touched the hearts of everyone who knows him. Now, it's our turn to lend a helping hand.

Personal Story

Joseph was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at the young age of 4. This hereditary condition affects the red blood cells, causing them to become rigid and form a sickle-like shape. As a result, these misshapen cells can obstruct blood flow, leading to severe pain, organ damage, and a multitude of other complications. Fortunately, Joseph is the only one in his family affected by this disease.

Throughout his life, Joseph has endured countless hospital visits, excruciating pain crises, and missed opportunities due to his condition. Despite the physical and emotional toll it takes, he has remained determined to not let sickle cell disease define him. Over the years sickle cell disease has led to much organ damage and complications to Joseph’s health; diabetes and cardiovascular problems among others.. Joseph's resilience is truly awe-inspiring.

Joseph worked for many years, he got his master’s at University Hawaii Manoa in Engineering. At a certain point in time his disease limited his ability to work. He attempts to work from home while improving his computer and coding skills.

Over the past ten years he helped take care of his mother Anora who was his main supporter until she got dementia. She died in 2021. During that time his family came together to support them, however, the burden is overwhelming.

Joseph also tries to give back by playing the guitar at church services and the hospital when he is able.

Financial Burdens

Managing sickle cell disease requires ongoing medical care, including doctor visits, medications, blood transfusions, and specialized treatments. These expenses, coupled with the unforeseen emergencies and lifestyle adjustments, have placed a significant financial burden on Joseph and his family. At this stage, Joseph receives monthly transfusions which allow him to live and function.

Unfortunately, the costs associated with managing sickle cell disease are often overwhelming, Joseph is unable to work as a result of all this and needs help.
