Support Jovanni's Eye Surgery Journey

Our 3 year old grandson Jovanni Perez started having eye problems back in March where both his eyes were crossing inward. He was complaining and crying of eye pain when we took him to the eye doctor and they told his parents that with “eye therapy” and a strong prescription and prism, it will fix well. However, 2 months later and his eyes still were not straight. His mom took him to a different eye doctor and they said that the prism was not helping him, rather making it worse. His ophthalmologist changed his glasses prescription and put him on a plan to hopefully naturally his eye would straighten, but they didn’t.

What Jovanni has is called Accommodative esotropia, a common form of esotropia that occurs in children usually 2 years or older. In this type of strabismus, when the child focuses the eyes to see clearly, the eyes turn inward. His eyes crossing occurs when focusing up close. He has been seeing the doctor every 3 weeks since May and it’s time that he gets a strabismus surgery done in both eyes.

If this surgery is prolonged for too long or not given at all, this can result in permanent loss of vision.

The eyeball is never removed from the socket during any kind of eye surgery. The ophthalmologist makes a small incision in the tissue covering the eye to reach the eye muscles. This will be done in both his eyes in Jovanni’s case. This will be to cover the cost of not just the surgeon fee, but as well as fees from the hospital itself as well as anesthesia cost since they are done separately. Although he will still need glasses after surgery, we are hoping that his eyes can fully straighten again.
