Support Kakuma Refugee Camp's Food Forest
Donation protected
Hi, I’m Patty Rangel, an Honorary Burning Man Earth Guardian and members of Burners Without Borders. I recently found out that the Development and Empowerment Society (DES) at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya is building a Food Forest, Sanctuary of Peace, and Sacred Grove to nourish both the land and the lives of refugees in one of the world’s most challenging environments. In just 15 months, they have achieved incredible milestones:
- Partnered with Musa of Live Foundation Aid to provide future Permaculture workshops for the Kakuma community.
- Partnered with the Council of Sustainable Settlements of Latin America to stand for the Rights of Mother Earth: Received support in registering our future food forest as a Sanctuary of Life and Peace.
- Cross-Cultural Connection: Inspired kids in Mexico to create a mural visualizing the future Kakuma sanctuary, shared as a gift of hope with the children at Kakuma.
- First Steps in Planting: Raised $100 USD to purchase 300 tree seeds and saplings, which the children of Kakuma planted to kickstart the food forest.
- Biochar Sustainability: Received a donation from soil remediation specialist, Michelle Wong of Los Angeles, who donated 9 biochar stoves to enhance soil health and sustainability practices.
- Global Tree Planting Expertise: Partnered with Mr. Raghunath Dhole of the Devrai Foundation, India’s renowned "Tree Man," whose team has created over 365 sacred groves. Mr. Dhole has pledged to train Kadjosi in replicating this model in Kakuma.
- Fruitful Future: Secured $1000 USD to purchase fruit trees in Nairobi, adding critical food resources to the forest.
- Infrastructure Support: Obtained $750 USD to build a security fence and water systems needed to protect and sustain the forest.
Now, we need your help to take the next steps!
Help Kakuma raise money the build a Sacred Grove (1000 tree food forest plantation)! Your support will provide creeper plants for shade and temperature reduction by covering tin roofs of refugee homes, provide Art in Nature therapy programs for Women and Children, provide medicinal plants that help fight Malaria, provide solar power for pumps and colorful LED lighting, Solar Art Sculptures that double up as charging stations for mobile phones, and provide community spaces in Nature.
Every dollar makes a difference:
$20 helps buy seeds and materials.
$100 helps build essential systems.
$2500 funds 1000 trees to be planted
Donations go a long way in Kenya! You can create a positive impact in the lives of thousands of people . Consider this your contribution to #ImpactInvesting and #MicroEconomy
Let’s make this vision a reality—for Kakuma, for the planet, for all of us.
