Support Kara's Fight Against Colon Cancer
Donation protected
Kara was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer, just six months after finishing chemotherapy last year for the original tumor in her colon. The cancer aggressively progressed to her ovaries (which were removed in April) and continues to progress throughout her peritoneum.
After recovering from her oophorectomy surgery, she will begin a targeted treatment regimen to try to reduce the amount of tumors (in early May). Kara’s cancer possesses an aggressive mutation called BRAF v600e, making the treatment options more limited, as the mutation is resistant to some treatments and often reoccurs even after being treated effectively.
Depending on how well the targeted therapy works, the hope is that she will qualify for CRS/HIPEC surgery in the future. When the cancer returns, or if the targeted treatments aren’t as successful as we hope, future therapies will include additional chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
Kara works in the higher-education world, and is a single parent. As such, her family is bringing together her community and our communities to ask for help in supporting her during this time.
Raising money is one way to help: this will ensure that Kara can focus on her treatment, without worrying about finances.
Last year, the gofundme campaign for Kara was crucial to her ability to get through treatment–we are so grateful for her supporters near and far. If you are not able to support financially, you are welcome to reach out about other things that might be helpful as she navigates this new reality (we are working to get a spreadsheet organized), and know that every text/message/thought/prayer is meaningful.
Funds will be used for:
- Monthly living expenses. Kara will be working a reduced schedule during treatment (so long as she is able), but the remaining loss of income for 6+ months hits hard for a single parent. This fund will make up the difference.
- Medical expenses. Her insurance currently covers a large portion of treatment, but she will still have significant out-of-pocket expenses for current and future treatment. #americanhealthcare
