Support Karen Gallant's Heart Surgery Recovery

My name is Melissa Gallant, daughter of Karen Gallant. Many of you who know my mother know how caring, compassionate, and hardworking she is. Karen has been a dedicated worker with Health PEI for over 30 years and has made many connections while going the extra mile for residents. Karen has always tried to do anything she could for someone in need without hesitation. Unfortunately, she has had more than her fair share of health issues that have included multiple abdominal surgeries.

On April 10, 2024, Karen arrived at the QEH with heartburn that would not subside, tightening in her chest and shortness of breath. Bloodwork and other diagnostic testing showed she suffered a heart attack, she was admitted to the ICU while waiting for an angiogram in St.John, NB; Unfortunately with the long list and state of our current healthcare system, it wasn't until 11 days later on April 21st, 2024. The angiogram revealed heartbreak news, she has experienced significant damage including 7 blockages, and several which are 90 % blockages which resulted in 100 percent of her heart being deprived of sufficient blood flow and oxygen. This diagnosis leaves her with open heart bypass surgery as the only viable option.

We are currently being told her surgery will take place on Thursday, April 25th, 2024 in St. John, NB. We have been given a timeframe of 5-10 days in the hospital in St.John in which she will be transported back to the QEH. The expenses have already begun accumulating during her already 2 weeks off work, and she has approximately 6 months on her road to recovery.

On behalf of Mom (Karen), We humbly ask you to consider helping aid in her medical and travel expenses amongst other related expenses to help alleviate some stress so she can focus on building her strength and healing until she can return to work.
