Support Kelsey and Maria’s IVF Journey

To the loved ones and community that are supporting Kelsey and Maria,

My name is Lizy Pierson and I am setting this GoFundMe up on their behalf as not only their friend, but as someone who considers them family.

Kelsey and Maria are reaching out to you, stepping out of their comfort zones with humble hearts and a dream. A dream to grow their family and give Sebastian a little sibling to grow up with in a home full of love and joy.

Kelsey and Maria’s Story:

Kelsey and Maria’s IVF journey began back in 2021, not long after being married during the pandemic. Their love for each other is absolutely incredible and they were eager right away to have a baby. However, their dream to have children together being a same-sex couple comes with barriers of its own. With Kelsey’s history of Breast Cancer in her family and losing her mom at the age of 16, she required a double mastectomy in 2019 as a preventative measure for her own health. She was also strongly recommended to not carry a child due to the hormonal aspect of her mom’s breast cancer and her own risk. However, with Maria’s desire to carry a baby, they knew they could make it work and become one in joining together each of them within the pregnancy.

They pursued IVF through CCRM Minneapolis to bring together their love and hope to make a family together. With the power of science and love, Kelsey and Maria went through IVF treatments side by side to pursue a fresh embryo transfer of Kelsey’s egg (with donor sperm) to Maria to carry. Being able to bring together their love as both were involved in the process was incredibly powerful and was a successful transfer and birth of a wonderful now 2 year old boy, Sebastian!

The rest of their embryos were saved in cryopreservation for the hope of future children together. As the 2 years have gone by so quickly with Sebastian, their hope and dream of having another baby has grown with each passing day. Unfortunately, IVF treatment for same-sex couples is not covered at all by insurance without an infertility diagnosis. With Kelsey working 3 jobs and Maria working 2, they used all of the savings they could muster on their own to make it happen for their first child, leaving them with minimal financial means to have more than one child together via IVF.

Why They Need Help:

They are turning to you, the communities they are involved in and strangers afar, for support. The costs associated with IVF are substantial. To complete another transfer will cost between $20-25,000. Despite working hard and saving diligently, it is insurmountable for them to cover these costs again without assistance to grow their incredible family.

How Your Support Helps:

Contributions will go directly towards IVF treatment/procedures to help conceive another pregnancy. Their hope to have their second and last child together can happen through the love of community support. Their initial appointment has happened and their doctor is confident in transferring another one of their cryopreserved embryos successfully following the same protocol as previous.

Every dollar raised will be used responsibly with the highest level of gratitude. Updates will be provided along the way of the transfer. Sharing their journey with others and raising awareness of accessibility for same-sex couples to have families is important to them.
