Support Kenisha's Journey to Stability

Hello, my name is Kenisha and I am a mother to 6 children soon to be 7 within the next 6 weeks. We have been experiencing homelessness since April 14th, 2024 and are in urgent need of support.

Over the last 12 years of marriage to my husband , my children and I have endured his verbal abuse, alcoholism, and several moments where my husband has left our home, severing communications with us and leaving me to care for our children alone. Overtime, it’s become critical to our livelihood and clear to me that in order for me and my children to heal then I need to take a leap and leave. Back in September of 2023 I found myself employment and my husband agreed to watch the kids during the day while I worked and he'd work evenings. It was all working out well until I mentioned divorce.

He then told me that if I did not want to be with him that he did not have to help me with the kids. As a result, I lost my job April 5th as he decided he wouldn't watch our now 9 month old anymore while I worked. He then blocked our kids from calling him and myself so we had no communication.

Since losing our apartment, I have contacted several shelters, government agencies like 211, and nonprofit organizations whose mission it is to help people in my position. So far, I’ve had no luck with every shelter being full and each resource becoming a dead end. My children and I have been living in hotel thanks to the support of family — however, they are no longer able to help as the cost continues to rise daily. We have until next Wednesday (5/17) to secure funding to be able to stay in our current hotel.

Currently weekly stays have been costing anywhere between $400 -600 per week. I’m reaching out to ask for support as we move through such an unstable time. Any amount that you donate will help cover the cost of our stay here and help with application fees for potential rental opportunities.

If you are connected to resources that can support us with securing long-term housing please reach out! I am in Community Housing Network’s Rapid Rehousing Program, who will pay 70-100% of my rent for 9 months if I am able to find a landlord or community who are willing to accept their program and payments. So far I haven't been approved for anything and not many will accept this program. Within those 9 months if I am able to find housing I have the opportunity to go back to my previous job and I'll be taking over payments.
