I came down with acute myeloid leukemia most likely at some point the summer of 2016. I felt unwell for a month or so until in October I had a dramatic decline over a few days and ended up being air-lifted to Vancouver General Hospital from the Comox Valley the day I finally made it in to emergency at the St Joe's hospital.
I ended up in ICU for 4 days and started chemotherapy almost immediately.
After 6 weeks in the hospital, a bone marrow biopsy determined that the induction chemo hadn’t worked.
I was discharged at the beginning of December to the Jean C Barber Lodge, an excellent facility subsidized by the Canadian Cancer Society where I remain to this day except for a handful of trips back to Hornby.
I am very grateful for this lodge, which is only $55 per night for room and board, otherwise I would not have had anywhere to go that I could afford with my extended benefits package.
Here's the rub though, my extended benefits plan has a limited time period where they'll pay part of the cost of the room and that time period is up.
In a nutshell I can't leave Vancouver because of the treatment that's keeping me alive and my savings will run out before my life does (fingers crossed on the life part). This will literally leave me homeless as I have no other option that is affordable and meets the needs of my severely compromised immune system.
I do have savings that will last me some while but the crunch is coming and I'd be extremely grateful for your donation.
Sincerely,
Kevin McMahon
