On Friday, August 23, 2024, between the hours of 12:45 am and 1:00 am, a shootout was taking place on Stobbes Street and Hancock Street in Saginaw. My great-grandson, Khalil Harris, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Khalil was struck by gunfire while running for his life and collapsed on Hancock Street. Local police administered medical help until the MMR arrived. Upon arrival at Covenant Hospital, Khalil succumbed to his injuries. Paradise Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements for Khalil Harris here in Saginaw, Michigan.
The police had to list him as John Doe because he had never been in the police database. Once Khalil was identified, his mom was notified early in the morning that her 15-year-old son was deceased in the hospital morgue, and she had to identify him on a monitor. Khalil was the son of a single parent. His mom, De’Ja-Janay Harris, was the mother of 4 boys and 1 daughter. Khalil was the second oldest male in his family. On April 15, 2020, his 5-month-old brother passed away during the night, and he witnessed the coroner and MMR taking baby Prince away, never to return home. Before Prince Amir's death, his cousin Miss Lakeshia Harris was murdered on January 19, 2020, from gun violence age 19.
With all the tragedies our family has endured, financially, the funds that are available to complete the funeral arrangements are not enough to finalize the service, so we’re asking for donations. Khalil never changed his attitude about life. Khalil loved sports, playing AAU basketball and football for his Stone Elementary School, The Girls and Boys Club Basketball team. I kept him busy with swimming lessons and taekwondo to keep him focused. During his 5th grade, he played football and basketball, winning a championship. He told his mom that he was going to be famous in sports so he could buy her a new house and a new car so she wouldn't have to worry all the time. He played basketball for the Thompson Middle School Tigers. It’s sad that we will not see him fulfill his dreams in sports, his first prom date, graduation, and having his own family one day. September 14, 2024 at Paradise Funeral Chapel is the service date for Khalil Harris
