Who Are We?
HUTAN is a community-led conservation organization working in the Malaysian state of Sabah in northeast Borneo. Their story began there in 1998, training a handful of youth from the village of Sukau to collect observational data on wild Orangutans. Today, the organization employs roughly 90 individuals in and around the Kinabatangan Floodplain, taking a holistic approach to wildlife conservation.
What is Through the Treetops about?
Meet Ocean, a 6-year old wild Orangutan. She lives in the fragmented forests of the Kinabatangan Floodplain. Through the Treetops takes the reader through a day of this young Orangutan’s life. Ocean brings a hopeful message, giving us a glimpse of how real issues facing wildlife are overcome in her home. This book is suitable for children 5-12 years old. However, we do hope this book will pique the curiosity of readers of all ages about the issues facing wildlife in fragmented landscapes throughout the world. The book is filled with hand-painted illustrations based on photographs taken by HUTAN researchers.
Why support this book?
Join us in celebrating the unsung heroes of HUTAN, who work tirelessly to help wildlife and people share this landscape peacefully. We are excited to share Ocean’s story with you, but it is as important to share this story throughout Sabah. Beyond covering the cost of production and shipping of the book to your doorstep, the funds raised here will go towards the production of this book in the Malay language, so that the book may be donated to local schools in Sabah. Any additional funds we receive will go towards HEAP activities.
What your donor dollars pay for?
With a minimum donation of US$22 if you are in North America (US$28 if you are in Europe), you will receive one softcover 8.5” by 11” first edition of Through the Treetops. The first 50 donors will also receive an 8.5” x 11” sheet of stickers with illustrations from the book.
Note: The difference in minimum donation is from the difference in estimated shipping fees between N.America and Europe.
If you’d like to have more than one copy delivered to you, please make sure to let us know. Otherwise, all funds above minimum donation will go towards the production and distribution of more Malay books.
Additional copies of the book in English cost US$17/book (including shipping within North America). The Malay version costs us an additional US$5.70 to produce.
To have an idea of how many books your donation will go towards based on how many books you would like to receive yourself, please see the table below based on the cost of delivery within N.America (Europe):
How do I order a book?
When you make your donation, if you could please provide us with your email address either in the comments or as a private message to our organizer (Elie Ancrenaz) - through the GoFundMe website near the bottom of the page, so that we may contact you to iron out any necessary details.
We will be getting in touch to ascertain:
How many books you would like to receive,
& Your mailing address where the books will be sent to.
If you have any further questions, please let us know by contacting our Organizer.
We will acknowledge your donation and the receipt of your information as soon as we receive it - we are operating on a 12 hour time difference so please be patient with us. We will be reconciling your messages and emails to the names and donations on this site just to make sure everyone gets their books when the books are available.
As our project is based in Borneo, we will be printing the book in Singapore to maintain control of the quality of the final product. The printed books will be shipped to the US, where they will be sent out via US Postal Service First-Class Mail to your location. You should have your copy of Through the Treetops in hand by the end of March 2021. Until then, we will send you a link for e-book version. You will be able to access the e-book until the end of April 2021.
