Support Kurt Melendy's Music Journey

Hello! My name is Kurt Melendy and I am a Doctoral Candidate studying double bass at the University of Colorado Boulder. My passion for music runs deep. Whether playing, teaching, composing, or researching, I am always finding new ways to become more involved in music. My current research is focused on the ergonomics of playing the instrument from an anatomical, kinesthetic, physiological, and psychological perspective. The goals for my research are twofold. The first goal is to decrease the likelihood of incurring a playing related injury. The second goal is to speed up the recovery or down time experienced from a previous injury, thus decreasing the time the musician is away from playing their instrument.

In my efforts to support the double bass community, I have served as a volunteer for the International Society of Bassists (ISB) since my first convention in 2017. As of the fall of 2023, I was appointed to be Technology Team Lead on the Board of Directors for the ISB. Our mission is to raise worldwide awareness of the double bass by inspiring, educating, and connecting people from around the world. My current leadership task involves restarting our CenterStage events that highlight worldwide artistic accomplishments, inclusive discussions, current research, and performances of double bassists.

To stimulate my growth as a musician, it is imperative that I upgrade my current equipment to best suit my performance goals in the solo, chamber, and orchestral setting. Acquiring a higher-level bow is currently improbable for me without financial assistance. As such, I am asking for financial support in the form of $7,500 to help me purchase a French Double Bass Bow. The next 'level' of bow that I am looking into is in the $10,000 price range. To offset the difference in what I am financially asking and the estimated price, I have been slowly saving money from paid performances and also selling some of my possessions.
