Lachlan is just shy of turning 16. He was born 14 May 2007. Toby, their second born son, was in the care of a girlfriend at 11 months old, when he choked on a vegemite sandwich.
Toby spent 11 days in an induced coma. When we woke him up, it was evident he had suffered severe brain damage.
Toby died, 8 days after his 1st birthday. Lachlan has grieved the loss of his brother, even though he never met him. The last few years have been tough on Lach. Starting Year 7 in the hope of meeting new friends, Covid hit. We quickly realised remote learning was not working for Lach. He became more and more withdrawn. He’d spend hours upon hours in his room gaming, watching his beloved Rugby League, and F1.
He was just starting to enjoy the world again. And then, on January 10, we received the call every parent dreads. Please take your son to hospital now. A day later, after being poked and prodded, we were told our son had Leukemia. Since then, he has been in hospital more than home, has had 8 lumbar punctures, 2 bone marrow aspirations, endless platelet and blood transfusions, more chemotherapy than any body should endure, lost his ability to walk or care for himself, fought hard to regain it, and not once, not once has he complained.
