Support Lana Greene’s Legal Battle - Justice for TJ

From his mom, Lana Greene:

"My son died surrounded by street drugs that he chose not to do, while he begged for access to life saving medication that he was denied access to…he could have accessed street drugs easily behind those walls but could not access safe medically prescribed medications for his brain illness - let that sink in".

TJ died on January 11, 2021 at the New Edmonton Remand Centre, by what they say was a suicide. He was arrested and awaiting his trail for theft on September 4, 2020. Something TJ was deeply ashamed of, something he attributed to his using substances and wanted help to get back to being " a productive member of society " as he put it and wrote it on his many health requests given to guards. TJ wanted help to not crave substances and to turn his life around and get back on track. TJ had been never been sentenced or even been at the New Edmonton Remand before. Both TJ and his mother Lana believed that if he asked for help there, in a " correctional facility" he would be able to get it. Upon arrival TJ began requesting both medications for substance use and for Bipolar Disorder & depression. Although TJ displayed on numerous occasions that he was extremely depressed ( not coming out of his cell for showers or for exercise many times.) TJ was repeatedly placed in administrative segregation for 23.5 hours a day and denied access to the supports he needed and wanted. TJ wrote a stack of health request forms begging for help, he never ever was given access to the medications that his brain needed. TJ was put in administrative segregation ( 23.5 hours a day let out twice a day for 15 minutes) for punitive reasons for his requesting to be moved for his safety and for asking for help. Guards did not follow their own policy and protocols. Guards did not do their rounds that were legally required of them to do, to do their one job and that was to keep TJ alive. TJ was denied access to basic human rights and suffered such atrocities as having his toilet paper and mattress taken away for asking too many times. Instead of getting access to help TJ received Re-traumatization and punitive punishment. AHS also broke many of their own policies, when they neglected to accurately review TJs recent medical history that clearly showed numerous drug poisonings, numerous stays at hospital for Psychosis and surgeries. AHS never called and requested medical history from family or from anywhere. They repeatedly ignored all of his requests for help and handed TJ pamphlets and told him to " follow up with his family dr." Something Lana states they very clearly would have known he did not have.
TJ’s death is directly due to the lack of access to medication and apathy on the part of the New Edmonton Remand Centre. These systemic issues need to be addressed, and Lana's efforts are pivotal in pushing for accountability and change.
Since the devastating and tragic loss of her son TJ, Lana has been fighting to have his voice heard and to create positive change for others, in hopes that no one ever be treated so terribly inhumane again.
Yes TJ made a mistake, one that he wanted to fix. TJ was a young father and so badly wanted to stay alive and be able to recover. TJ is remembered for having a big heart, a great sense of humor and a love for his fellow human beings. He was a son, a baby brother, a cousin, a nephew, a friend. He was a good person, who deserved so much more.
Lana says that there will never be " Justice for TJ " as what TJ lived through can never be undone. Stopping this from ever happening again would be the closest thing to justice. Justice for TJ means Justice for us all.
This has been a costly endeavor and we would like to help Lana with it.
