Happy New Year. I’m creating this GoFundMe page for Landon Mayer, a dear friend and fly-fishing mentor to me and countless others across Colorado, the country, and even the world. For over 27 years, Landon has guided in Colorado and spent a full season guiding on Alaska’s Nak Nek River. His contributions to the sport are truly remarkable.

 

Landon is a celebrated fly tier and a frequent contributor to Fly Fisherman magazine and High Country Angler. He’s also the accomplished author of five books that are considered classics in the fly-fishing community.

 

Known for his energy, fitness, and independence, Landon has been a thriving fly-fishing guide based in South Park, Colorado. But everything changed about a week ago. A freak accident while working out left him questioning whether he’d ever feel his legs again. After a trip to the ER and three days in the hospital, he now faces the likelihood of spinal surgery in the near future. Like many fishing guides, Landon doesn’t have health insurance, and the medical bills are already mounting. Physical therapy and rehabilitation will play a significant role in his recovery, and surgery seems inevitable.

 

Will he be able to trek into Spinney Mountain Reservoir? Will he walk the Dream Stream in search of giant trout again? Those who know Landon know he’ll give everything he has to physical therapy and recovery. For now, he’s hoping to avoid surgery as long as possible, but the future remains uncertain.

 

For years, Landon has taught fly-fishing skills and inspired countless anglers to appreciate the sport and the outdoors. Now, he needs help—a difficult ask for someone as independent as him. His recovery will require immediate physical therapy, ongoing rehab, and potentially in-home care following surgery. Living alone in Woodland Park adds to the challenges ahead.

 

This road won’t be easy and will certainly strain Landon's resources. It may also require him to adapt the way he approaches guiding in the future. But for now, the focus is on physical therapy, recovery, and managing the growing medical expenses.
