Hi, my name is LaQwana Smith, and I want to start by saying this message comes from a place of deep humility, love, and hope. Creating this GoFundMe wasn’t easy—I was nervous and unsure. I didn’t think anyone would see me. But friends and family reminded me GOD makes no mistakes… so here I am, stepping out on faith.

After being unexpectedly laid off from GEICO, I saw an opportunity to finally pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. MERCER UNIVERSITY opened that door for me—and at no cost, at first. I was overjoyed. I knew this was God at work. They say if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. And I’ve learned He’s truly in control.

This journey has been filled with purpose and passion. I’ve seen firsthand how much I’m meant to be in the classroom, pouring into young minds. But recently, due to political changes and the elimination of DEI funding, I received heartbreaking news—MERCER can no longer cover my tuition. I’ve applied for countless scholarships and grants but have reached a wall.

So now, with love, I’m asking my community—my village—to help me finish what I started. I have just two semesters left before I can proudly become a certified teacher. While Pell and HOPE help, they don’t cover everything. And I’ve been trying hard to avoid loans, because I see my journey continuing—into a master’s degree and beyond.
