Out of thousands of eager applicants, I am one of 40 that have been selected to ride in the Mongol Derby, the worlds toughest and longest horse race. The race covers 1000km following the historic mail route of Genghis Khan across the wild Mongolian Steppe. Nomadic Mongolian families house, feed and provide their best horses for each rider while a team of international vets, medics and support insure the basics needed to gallop through this race– the ultimate test of human and equine endurance. It’s a blend of insanity, skill and grit to willingly partake in the Mongol Derby, and I couldn’t be more excited to accept the opportunity.
This race is an opportunity for me to experience one of the greatest challenges of endurance, and horsemanship. As a seeker of growth and adventure, the Mongol Derby is a dream and a challenge. Want to join me vicariously?
I am asking for sponsors and donations to financially support my race entry, travel and gear. These include:
Entry fee of $14,500 which pays for the following:
-The herding communities, that supply racers with their horses, room and board.
-The veterinarian team that travel to support the well being, health and support of the racing horses.
-The medic team that travel to offer continued emergency care to riders in need.
-The on site race support team, logistics, GPS tracking/race updates, media and communication.
-Equipment: Saddle, GPS Garmin 64s
-Pre-race training; racers receive an intensive pre-race course review, GPS system training, cultural expectations, race protocol and emergency planning/logistics.
-Pre/post race logistics, planning, coordination staff
Not included in the entry fee are:
-travel costs to and from Ulaanbaktar
-the first and last night’s hotel room and board in Ulaanbaktar
-pre-race training/fitness program
-rider’s gear:
1. Helmet and sun shield
2. endurance specific stirrups
4. Endurance specific fenders
4. Pack
5. Water bladder
6. Medical kit
7. Ultralight weight sleeping bag
8. Ultralight down jacket and rain coat, rain pants
9. Hiking/riding shoes
10. Saddle to train in pre-race
11. GPS Garmin 64s system to train with pre-race
This is the opportunity of a lifetime. And I hope you will also be a part of my ‘digital” team; follow my training and ultimate race progress on-line; join me for after-race lectures and talks; and receive digital photos of my pre-race and post-race activities.
