Save the Horses saw Lester was heading to slaughter. An old mule, not many people wanting him. Lester came from the Amish in Pennsylvania. He is a sweet draft mule. He was a work horse and he was pretty much worn out when he got here He deserved a real retirement after years of hard work.
Lester has been healthy with a good appetite but a few days ago, he had no interest in food. Horses love food! You can move them miles with a carrot so we knew something was wrong. He was offered different foods but he still turned his nose. He looked uncomfortable lying down.
Yesterday, the vet came out and gave him fluids. If he had an impaction, sometimes fluids help move it through the colon overnight.
This morning, he was still uncomfortable.
Lester was taken to the University of Georgia large animal hospital. He road quietly and arrived standing. Sometimes when a horse is colicky, they will lay down in the trailer or go up and down thrashing.
Lester is a very stoic, doesn't want anyone to worry about him. He is here for us. He gives to all humans in therapy or just visiting him, he will make your heart smile.
UGA estimated the bill at $9500 depending on the length of stay, surgery if needed and after care.
Save the Horses has had many veterinary emergencies and hospital bills since the beginning of 2024. Please give if you can. Help us help Lester. Pray for him. Send good thoughts and please share!
