Support LGBTQ Refugees on Block 13 in Kakuma Camp
Donation protected
My name is Victor Mukasa, an international LGBTQ+ human rights defender and consultant from Uganda, now living in the US.
I am raising relief funds for 137 LGBTQ+ refugees on Block 13 Kakuma Camp in Kenya, for food, medical care, bedding and other basics.
These refugees have continued to face violent homophobic and transphobic attacks from fellow refugees and from natives of the land. The worst attack so far took place on June 19, 2020. At least 31 LGBTQ refugees were wounded badly in this massive attack, requiring hospital. They sustained injuries to include; deep cuts on their bodies, broken limbs, heavy blood loss, head injuries and more. Their property was either stolen or destroyed by the attackers. They did not get help from those mandated to protect them and their property. They got minimal first aid from a hospital that night and that was it. A couple of days later their injuries got worse. They needed help. They needed to go to hospital for proper care, they were hungry as their food was stolen during the attacks. I started an online campaign calling on the UNHCR to evacuate them from Kakuma camp, which is clearly not a safe place for LGBTQ refugees. That campaign is on-going. I also raised some money from friends that have helped to cater for their medical bills, food, first aid materials, and special nutrition for those living with HIV/AIDS, etc. My friends cannot sustain this. With those funds, 62 have been able to get treated from a private hospital. However, many more need to see a doctor and some of those on treatment have review appointments coming soon. The need for food and other basic materials for sanitation still stands. There are also children who desperately need special attention. There have been more attacks since June 19, hence, more casualties.
The need for this minimum of $5000 is immediate and I request you to contribute to this cause in ways that you can.
