Lila's Miracle: Fund Her Life-Saving Surgery

Donation protected
Greetings to all,

My name is Amala, and while many of you may know me as the founder of Paws In Your Hands Rescue, today, I am reaching out about a deeply personal matter separate from my rescue efforts.

In December 2019, I adopted my beloved pug mix, Tate. At the time, he was 11 years old and became my first personal rescue. Sadly, in May 2024, Tate passed away at the age of 15.5 years, leaving an undeniable void in my life. While I had no intention of taking on another dog, an unexpected miracle happened shortly after his passing in early June 2024. Knowing my love for pugs, my wonderful friends at Bastrop County Animal Shelter (BCAS) introduced me to a 3-month-old female pug puppy in desperate need of a new beginning. Without hesitation, I decided to adopt her, naming her Lila. While this was supposed to be an exciting and joyous time, it has been an overwhelming couple of weeks filled with anxiety and uncertainty.

When Lila arrived at the shelter, she was infested with fleas, burdened by worms, and suffering from coccidia. Most distressingly, Lila was dealing with a rectal prolapse that refused to stay corrected despite multiple interventions.

For reference: Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectum, the last part of the intestines, gets turned inside out (everted) and sticks out of the anus.

Lila’s journey has been far from easy. In such a short amount of time, she has already undergone numerous procedures, proving to be a fighter despite all odds.

  • June 11, 2024: Lila underwent her first surgery to address her rectal prolapse. The veterinary team placed a purse-string suture around her rectum. She was mildly dehydrated and had a 2 cm rectal prolapse that was inflamed but showed no signs of necrosis. The surgery was challenging, requiring Lila to be intubated twice.

  • June 17, 2024: Lila had her sutures removed after initial treatment for her rectal prolapse seemed successful. Unfortunately, her prolapse recurred within just a few hours, leading to an urgent visit with Dr. Hatfield at Essential Vet Care.

  • June 18, 2024: A significant complication was revealed during her appointment. Lila was diagnosed with a stricture in her colon, likely caused by trauma, which made standard treatments ineffective. Dr. Hatfield placed her second purse-string and referred her to Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital (CTVSEH).

  • June 24, 2024: Lila was seen by Dr. Pugliese, a specialist at CTVSEH. Initially, there was hope for no further treatment if there was no recurrence. However, Lila prolapsed again, and it was determined that she needed a life-saving operation known as a colopexy. Until she could undergo this surgery, she needed a third purse-string placed.

Thankfully, Lila’s colopexy surgery is scheduled for Monday, July 1, 2024. This surgical procedure works by using sutures to secure the colon to the abdominal wall until fibrous collagen tissue binds the organ permanently.

As you can imagine, this is a lot for any dog to handle, let alone a 5 lb 3-month-old puppy who also happens to be a flat-faced breed, making procedures involving anesthesia worrisome. However, while this is lifesaving for Lila, the surgery is not typically high risk and is done fairly regularly.

While Lila remains in Texas, she has been blessed with the extraordinary care of her foster parents, Scott Hardy and Christine Hardy-Hayes. They have provided relentless attention, love, and meticulous medical care, nurturing her with the emotional support crucial for her recovery.

I am raising funds for Lila's medical expenses as I am personally handling her case rather than going through my rescue organization. The costs for her surgery, appointments, and ongoing care are substantial. Your support could provide Lila with the lifesaving treatment she needs to survive. Once she is healthy, stable, and medically cleared, she can finally make her journey to Boston. We anticipate her arrival to be in early August 2024 if all goes well.

No contribution is too small, and every bit helps immensely. Alternatively, sharing her story on social media or with friends and family extends the reach of our plea and increases the chances of Lila’s successful recovery.

How You Can Help: Donate and Share!

We appreciate any form of support, whether it is financial, emotional, or spiritual. Please keep Lila in your thoughts as she prepares for this life-altering surgery. With your help, we can provide her with a future filled with love, security, and good health. We will continue to provide updates on her throughout this journey.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering supporting Lila.

Warm regards,
Amala
