Little House in the Forest is the only year round, Forest School in San Juan Island, WA. We have been providing magical, outdoor learning experiences for pre and elementary school age children for 7 wonderful years.
Our philosophy aims to support a love of learning, foster a healthy sense of self, and instill the confidence to feel and act as a free-thinker. Through our unique child-led, agile curriculum, we focus on the holistic needs of the children: their social skills, resilience, creativity and self-esteem, to help them succeed, in any setting, throughout their lives.
Guided by our loving and highly experienced educators, children engage in play, arts and crafts, cooking, bush skills, song, storytelling, science experimentation, hiking, nature investigation, long-term collaborative projects, social/emotional skills building and more!
As a much needed local resource, I am growing this social enterprise and hoping to further meet the needs of the community. For our 7th year birthday, I aim to raise money for scholarships and improvements to our school equipment and infrastructure to help us and the families we serve to thrive!
Thank you for considering to assist my passion for making alternative education accessible to this community. It is a true labor of love.
From Amy and my fabulous team; Katherine, Caleb and Storrie.

Our journey with the school began in the early days with the parent and child group, and it’s been incredible to watch it grow into such a vibrant community over the years. The shared love of the outdoors and dedication to child-centered learning not only nurtured our children’s curiosity and independence but also brought us closer as families. We feel so lucky to have been a part of a place that truly understands the value of nature and community in education. Thank you, Amy, for creating such a special space for all of us.

Little House in the Forest school is exactly what childhood should be. I loved watching my son thrive at forest school. He learned so many amazing social and play skills all while having a blast in nature. Amy and her crew are pure magic, and make guiding children look like the most natural thing in the world.

Forest School is how we all should live. Celebrating community while soaking up a deep connection with nature. Creativity flows! Ms. Amy inspires kids to find their own delight exploring nature. It’s truly magical.

Little House in the Forest was a beautiful and nurturing experience for my preschooler! She had the space and time to embrace nature at her own pace, from watching a slug go by to figuring out how to climb a tree to working with friends to build a fairy house in a fern grove. Two years later, I can still witness the positive impacts forest school had for her. She holds a special reverence for the natural world and the confidence to move about in nature that I expect will last a lifetime.

Wilder’s social skills and conflict resolution skills have changed so much since starting forest school. It’s amazing to see him use calming techniques and interact with his peers so positively.

Forest School has been a truly special experience for both of my kids. It’s a place where they can explore, unleash their creativity, and grow more independent, all while being nurtured and supported. One of my children was part of the very first cohort while he was in preschool and has returned every summer since. It remains one of his absolute favorite places, for all these reasons. I can’t recommend the experience highly enough!

Watching Cam this summer and the way she interacts with nature and how she communicates about it to her friends has been magical to witness and is truly a testament to the teacher and person Amy is. I don’t think she would have the love, passion, interest, etc for the outdoors and the life within it without the influence of Little House in the Forest. The gifts it gave Cam are invaluable. We appreciate you and all the things you instilled in our tiny human (who suddenly isn’t so tiny anymore) Thank you
