Support Livelihoods & Lands In Eastern Region Ghana

The Project
The Sub250 Ghana Regeneration Project is currently helping reclaim land in Kwahu district located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, West Africa. Through the project in partnership with Chiefs, local government, farmers, and local communities, we are restoring, revitalizing, and replanting on distressed lands around vital water sources in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Why Is This Project Needed?
The Kwahu district in the Eastern Region of Ghana, is one of the areas that have been affected by the practices of illegal gold mining, known as 'Galamsey' as well as the illegal mining of both sand and clay. As a result, vast areas of land are now rendered dysfunctional, with disrupted land contours and ecosystems, making it harder for people to grow enough food locally to eat and sell. Other serious consequences of illegal mining are the polluting and redirecting of waterways. Many areas have large, deep pits left by the illegal mining practices, many with stagnant water collected inside them, that pose danger to humans and animal life in and around the areas.
Already Achieved
We are endeavoring to build on our initial project in the Kwahu district where we worked with The Chief of the affected lands, the Obomeng Hene, Nana Effah Opinamang III, local miners, community groups and farmers, to reclaim an initial 20 hectares of distressed land and plant some 30,000 trees. We continue to move forward with the Sub250 Ghana project of Land Reclamation, Restoration and Reintegration.
Local community members help with the unloading of the 30,000 tree seedlings
We are now also working with other Chiefs in the district and have gained the assistance of The Forestry Research Institute, the EPA and as always, the local communities, to reclaim more distressed lands, return ecosystems to a pre-mined state and assist in the reforestation crusade by planting even more trees for our future generations.
What is Agroecology

We have adopted an approach known as agroecology. It is an ecologically sustainable approach to farming with proven effectiveness at increasing farmers’ resilience to climate change, sustainability, reducing toxic exposures, and enhancing biodiversity.
The Sub250 Ghana Project will focus on training, empowering and equipping local farmers, with particular emphasis placed on the young people and female groups living in the affected communities, promoting agroecology in their communities. Our continued efforts will provide the communities with long lasting jobs, regenerative ecosystems and help improve people's lives. This project will put unproductive arable lands back to a pre-mined state, make communities stronger and better equipped to face the global challenges of climate change.
Help Us Complete this Regeneration Project
A nursery for plant seedlings being constructed for the Sub250 Ghana project
Phase 1: Reclaim an initial 20 hectares of distressed land and plant 30,000 trees.
Final cost: £150,000
Status: Complete
- Support the ongoing fight against illegal mining practices in the area and help isolate the risks of further destruction.
- Create a suitable rooting medium for good tree growth that is no less than 4 feet deep and composed of topsoil, weathered sandstone and/or the best available material.
- Loosely grade the topsoil or topsoil substitute established in step one to create a non compacted growth medium.
- Use ground covers that are compatible with growing trees and crops.
- Plant two types of trees--early successional species for wildlife and soil stability, and sustainable farmed, commercially valuable crop trees.
- Plant cash crops employing organic, sustainable, regenerative farming practices, to ensure sustained ecosystems and crop productivity on the reclaimed lands.
Phase 2: Reclaim and revitalise a further 40 hectares of distressed land, introducing agroecology farming procedures, and providing ongoing training, administration and farm management services.
Cost estimate: £300,000
Status: Fundraising currently being embarked on.
Phase 3: Complete the Sub 250 GH initiative program of reclaiming and re-vegetating 400 hectares of distressed land.
- Introduce an Agri-tech digital platform, which will provide vital assistance for farmers by providing an exit strategy for the farmed crops, enabling farmers to reap better financial rewards for their harvests.
Cost estimate: £TBC
- Current status: Initial quotes per hectare received. We are also engaging with agronomists and reforestation experts to help improve the plan.
- Implement reforestation and crop insurance,
- Improve health and safety
- Invest in certified seeds, plants, inputs needed to improve resilience to degraded lands (e.g., reforestation)
- Provide training on practices to improve land management (e.g., terracing, drainage)
- Provide ongoing support to help restore community emotional and financial well-being through social inclusion directives, such as the formation of cooperatives wherever possible.
Why support this work?
With your help; the Sub 250 team and its partners will bring these proven techniques to farmers throughout the Eastern region of Ghana. All the same time, the project will protect ecosystems, help sustain the lands and support farmers' livelihoods. Not only that, it will also support communities, providing meaningful opportunities to local youth and women in particular.
