Support Lucas on his Road to Recovery after Crash

On Sunday, July 30th, a call was made that no parent or significant other wanted to get. After leaving work, Lucas and his roommate had been involved in a head-on collision on County Road 905. Less than five miles from their apartment, an oncoming car swerved into their lane and hit the truck head-on, promptly closing the road.
The boys had both been badly injured. The passenger could crawl out from the wreckage, but Lucas remained in the truck with his feet and legs pinned behind the wheel. The fantastic fire rescue and EMS crews from Monroe County and Ocean Reef were critical in keeping them calm, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and FHP did a fantastic job informing their loved ones about what was happening.
The officers informed the roommate’s girlfriend that the boys would be okay, however; they needed to be airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center due to the extent of the trauma. Both were airlifted out of Ocean Reef and brought to the hospital, where doctors examined them.
Lucas had broken both of his feet. His right foot had a compound fracture, and they knew surgery was in the future for him.
Later that day, Lucas was taken to surgery and endured six hours in the Operating Room to fix the damage to his feet and ended up with a plate, eight screws in his right foot, and more hardware in his left foot. He is not allowed to put any weight on his left foot for five to six weeks and his right foot for four to six months.
Lucas was discharged late Thursday after they found a wheelchair for him to use. He will remain at his mother’s residence until they can find a solution to their living situation at their apartment and how he can get around over the next few months.
There is also additional talk of multiple surgeries so that he can regain more mobility once the main breaks are healed. This will result in more hospital time, time off work, and debt.
Since his truck was destroyed in the accident, it also leaves him uncertain of what to do once he can work again.
All of the funds raised will be used to help cover the mounting medical bills and living expenses.
Lucas is very grateful for all the love and support shown to him over the past week and is determined to get up and about as soon as the doctors tell him he can.
Lucas currently works at The Airport at Ocean Reef, Key Largo Parasail, and in the winter, he bartends at The Racquet Club at Ocean Reef.
