We are Mariachi Leones de Columbia, a dedicated group of Columbia University students passionate about preserving and performing traditional mariachi music. Our ensemble is primarily composed of first-generation, low-income students who are in need of support for instruments and uniforms.
Over the past year, we have made a powerful impact on the Columbia community, sharing the rich cultural heritage of mariachi music through our performances. Despite our success, we have faced financial challenges. While we have managed to purchase a vihuela and a guitarrón with the money we earn from gigs, we have not been able to save enough for the traditional mariachi attire, known as trajes.
Trajes are an essential and costly investment for our group. They not only enhance our performances but also help us to proudly represent our cultural roots. For many of us, this is our first experience being part of a mariachi group, and wearing a traje is a badge of honor. We hope to be in full uniform before some of our founding members graduate this coming school year, making this a memorable and proud moment for them and for us.
Your generous support would enable us to acquire these uniforms and continue spreading the joy of mariachi music for many years to come. With the backing of our community, we are confident that we can achieve this goal. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference.
Thank you for helping us keep the spirit of mariachi alive at Columbia!
