Support Marie Carew's Battle Against Bone Cancer

Help Us Support Our Beloved Marie Carew

We’re writing to you today not just as business owners, but as people who deeply care about someone who’s become family. Our names are Louise Ellis, Donna Dobbin and John Moloney and together we are co owners of Jane Doe Lounge, a cozy Irish bar tucked into Midtown Manhattan. In December 2023, we hired a new team member, Marie Carew — a bright, funny, big-hearted 33-year-old born and raised in Queens, New York.

Marie’s roots stretch back across the Atlantic — her father hails from County Galway, and her mother, though born in New York, was raised in County Sligo and her siblings Monica, Christina, James Gabriel, you can feel that mix of Irish warmth and New York resilience in everything Marie does. From the moment she walked through our doors, she lit up the place. She was one of those rare souls who instantly felt like part of the family. Her charm, her work ethic, her wit — she became part of the furniture, as we say, and our regulars adored her just as much as we did.

A few months ago, Marie started experiencing pain in her leg — specifically in her shin. Like most of us would, she brushed it off, assuming it was just a shin splint or a muscle strain. She kept working, never one to complain, even as the pain worsened and swelling appeared. About eight weeks ago, it became impossible to ignore. Louise, one of our team, urged her to see a doctor immediately. None of us could have imagined what would come next.

After multiple scans and X-rays, Marie was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. The tumor in her leg had grown to a staggering six inches long, wrapping around the bone. Doctors told her that if she didn’t stop working immediately and begin treatment, she could lose her leg entirely.

Marie is now facing the fight of her life. Her treatment plan includes:
• 3 months of intense chemotherapy
• Major surgery with bone grafting to try and save her leg
• Another 3 months of chemotherapy after the operation

This battle will be grueling — physically, emotionally, and financially. As Marie begins this difficult journey, she needs our help. She’s unable to work and will need support for basic living expenses, medical bills, transportation to and from treatment, and the countless costs that come with a cancer diagnosis.

We are asking for your support — whatever you can give — to help Marie survive the next year. This isn’t just about financial assistance; it’s about giving someone who has given so much to others the fighting chance she deserves.

Marie’s strength is incredible, and her spirit remains unshaken. But she can’t do this alone. Please consider donating, sharing this story, or simply keeping Marie in your thoughts. Every bit helps, and every gesture brings her one step closer to healing.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
