In the wake of the Asheville disaster, most residents lack necessities like water, food, and gas. Even if their houses aren't destroyed, they are still without power or running water. Thousands of people are stuck in emergency shelters around Asheville and are waiting in long lines for amenities like bathrooms and showers. With the water pipes in Asheville being decimated, experts are projecting it will be another month before running water is restored.
However terrible these conditions are, by the grace of God, my parents' rental cottages were virtually untouched by the storm. Marshall and Tracie started these cottages over 20 years ago and have built more than 15 units. For those two decades, the cottages have been a place of luxurious comfort and vacationing, now they have been turned into an shelter for the needy. They are choosing to open the cottages for those without homes (or homes without water) to come and either stay or just shower and do laundry. They are providing three meals a day for guests and the cottages, including a group of Forest Service workers who are staying with them. Every night the grounds are filled with people coming together for a meal to remember what it was like before this great tragedy struck.
Through all of this, my mom and dad (Marshall and Tracie) are committed to keeping the cottages open for those in need. Not only that, but they want to continue paying their 10 cleaning staff. When I asked Marshall what he needed to keep the lights and the well running for the month, he sheepishly said $30,000 would do it, but I think we can raise $50,000. If we can achieve this, they can open up more cottages and do more for those thousands of families in dire need.
Would you prayerfully consider joining me in giving to raise this goal? Thank you so much!
