Incident: A Life-Altering Nightmare

Dear friends, family, and compassionate souls,

The Unexpected Tragedy

On June 30th, our lives took a devastating turn when a seemingly routine day turned into a life-altering nightmare. My husband Matthew and our 15-year-old son were preparing to run errands when a sudden and unexpected incident occurred in our garage, instantly shattering our world.

The Tragic Garage Mishap

As they attempted to open the garage door, it stopped about halfway up. Matthew headed over to take a look and after not finding any obvious issue, asked our son to push the button again to see if it would open. As the door attempted to open once again, a loud snap was heard, and then our son watched helplessly as his father's body went limp, falling backward onto the hard garage floor. A bracket holding the tensioner cable on the wall unexpectedly ripped loose and swung out with incredible force, striking Matthew squarely in the face.

A Heroic Effort

The impact was so severe that blood was everywhere, and Matthew lay on the floor unresponsive. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach 911, our son called me on my cell phone to tell me his dad was hit in the face and was bleeding badly, and 911 wasn’t answering. I told him I would call and headed downstairs to see what happened.

After my 3rd attempt, I reached a dispatcher, and as I began telling them what happened, my words trailed off, a lump stuck in my throat, leaving me unable to speak as I looked up to see our son walking into the house from the garage, covered in blood. In his arms, he carried his father, unconscious, into the living room and gently laid him onto the couch. He turned around and ran out of the room. He returned moments later with clean towels to use to put pressure on the wounds and one with cold water to put around his dad's neck to cool him off. He remained so calm, so focused that for a moment I had forgotten that he is still a child, whose father is hurt, the extent unknown, and while I was sobbing, he remained brave for both of us. He did not go to the hospital with us, but called me a short time later after having time to collect his thoughts, and I could hear him silently weeping to himself over the trauma that he had just witnessed happening to his father.

Extensive Injuries and Hospitalization

An ambulance rushed him to the hospital, where specialists had to evaluate and treat the extensive trauma to his face. Matt endured multiple deep lacerations, requiring sutures on his nose, cheekbone, forehead, and even his eyelid, where a large piece of facial tissue had been torn away. Remarkably, the bracket narrowly missed his eye, sparing his eyesight, and even more importantly, his life.

Despite his incredible luck, Matt suffered serious injuries, including a fractured orbital eye socket, a fractured frontal sinus cavity, and a serious concussion. While scars will eventually heal, this accident has left him with long-term challenges.

Long-Term Challenges

One of the most pressing issues is the significant scar tissue that has formed on his eyelid due to the difficulty of suturing. This scar tissue causes chronic pain and has caused his eyelid to sag, making it difficult to open his eye fully. He is scheduled for surgery to correct the alignment and alleviate the pain.

Additionally, the accident has left Matt with severe light sensitivity, making it challenging for him to be outdoors or in bright rooms without dark sunglasses. While this sensitivity may improve with time, there's no guarantee.

Matt also had a minor tear in his retina, which was repaired. However, this traumatic eye injury puts him at risk of retinal detachment in the future. We must closely monitor his condition for any potential symptoms.

The Financial Hardship and Emotional Struggles

This journey has been incredibly challenging for our family. Matt is a selfless individual who has always been the first to lend a helping hand to others in need. Seeing him in this vulnerable state, unable to work and struggling with his health, has been heart-wrenching.

Financially, we were already facing difficulties due to past financial hardships, including the impact of COVID-19 last year. Matt's inability to work since the accident has exacerbated our financial struggles. We have fallen behind on rent and utility payments, and our vehicle, which is crucial for Matt's job, is at risk of repossession due to past-due payments.

Reaching Out for Support and A Plea for Help

Despite these challenges, we are reaching out to our community for support. Your generous donations will help cover Matt's medical expenses, surgery costs, and daily living expenses that we are currently unable to meet. Your financial support will also prevent the devastating consequences of eviction and vehicle repossession.

I know money is tight for everyone, but every dollar will help. If you are unable to donate financially, please consider sharing this fundraiser with your family, friends, and your social network. Your help and support will be remembered and cherished, and they will make a profound impact on Matt's recovery and our family's future.

The Power of Connection

Most importantly, please keep Matt and our family in your prayers. For those of you who know Matt personally, I would like to encourage you to reach out to him. A simple visit, phone call, text, or Facebook message would mean the world to him. He has always been there for others no matter what he had going on in his life, and now it's our turn to be there for him.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for considering supporting our family during this challenging time. Your compassion and assistance are appreciated. more than you will ever know.

With love and gratitude,
The Green Family

Matthew is a loving husband, father and grandfather who wants nothing more than to spend time with his family. Our grandson was afraid of him when he went to see him at the hospital after the accident and that was very traumatic for Matthew. He has isolated himself a lot since the accident, worried what people will think or say about this face. Please help me let him know that he is such an incredible person, no one cares about that...they see right past it and see his heart and spirit!!
