Help Matt McCall on His Road to Recovery
Hello! First, thank you for reading Matt’s story and for your love and support! My name is Danielle Allen, and I’m writing on behalf of my sister, Keelia McCormack, her significant other, Matt McCall, and our entire family, of which Matt has become a beloved member.
Matt’s Medical Journey
On Tuesday, July 23rd, Matt experienced numbness in his arms and legs, along with slurred speech. Initially, urgent care diagnosed this as a reaction to his pneumonia medication. However, his symptoms worsened into the next day, and after a frightening fall, he was transported via ambulance to Lexington Medical Center. He is now in the progressive care unit.
Given his extreme fatigue, reduced motor skills and speech, and widespread numbness, doctors have preliminarily diagnosed Matt with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare disease where the immune system attacks the nerves. While there is no cure, immunoglobulin infusions can ease and slow symptoms. As of today, Matt has completed the five day course of treatment, which we hope will stunt the disease’s progression and start his healing process. Although many people make a full recovery, it’s a long journey involving physical, occupational, and speech therapy first at an inpatient rehab facility, followed by home based therapy for weeks or months to come.
The Financial Burden
As we look ahead, Matt faces significant medical costs including ER transport, hospitalization and rehabilitation. Although Matt has insurance, there will be significant costs beyond his coverage after a hospital stay of this magnitude which most of us never anticipate. We realized he needs help from our community. While fiercely loved by his family, he doesn’t have many close family members: his father passed away when he was young, and his mother lives out of town.
Every contribution, no matter the size, significantly aids Matt on his path to recovery. As we navigate this challenging journey, we humbly ask for your support to ensure Matt receives the care he deserves.
If you know Matt, you know he is one of the kindest, funniest, most down-to-earth people you’ll ever meet. Thoughtful and witty, Matt literally uses his hands and feet to make a living. When he isn’t playing the organ or piano for Shandon Presbyterian Church, he is teaching piano lessons for kids and adults alike. Matt’s presence enriches our lives at home, church, and in our daily interactions. Now, we’re ready to support him in his fight for a full recovery.
How You Can Help
We are seeking funds to help Matt pay for expenses not covered by insurance, and all the yet unanticipated expenses to come. The road ahead is more like a marathon than a sprint, and we appreciate your financial support and prayers as we all navigate this journey together with Matt.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
With gratitude,
