As many of you know, Matt Shirkey, bike mechanic extraordinaire @ Southwest Cyclery, had a serious motorcycle accident about six weeks ago. The driver of the car that collided with him was cited for multiple violations but was unlicensed and uninsured.

Sadly, Matt's passenger, Cindy Aldana, died of her injuries. Matt has multiple serious fractures and has had surgeries on his pelvis, right heel, left elbow, left shoulder, and a partial amputation of his left foot. He is not allowed to put weight on his left foot for several more weeks which, because of arm injuries, has restricted him to a wheelchair.

I visited Matt two weeks ago. Since completing a stint at hospital for 3 weeks and 2 weeks at a rehab hospital, he is still unable to completely take care of himself. He is staying at a friend's home in southwest Houston and is doing well, all things considered. He has even surprised his doctors a bit with his progress. But he still has a long road ahead of him and getting back to normal or as close as possible to normal life will take time and support.

Matt has been told that he may need more surgeries in the near future, including a hip replacement and possible amputation of the left foot.

Although Matt has medical insurance, there are multiple medical expenses such as prescriptions, therapy, doctor visits, and also living expenses that need to be taken care of before he is able to work again. We all know Matt is a hard worker who will get back to work as soon as he is able.

Matt has fixed a lot of bikes over the years. Now is the opportunity for people to show their gratitude and provide some financial support.
