Support Mattie as she stomps Sarcoma

This is Miss Mattie Cole of Madison Township, West Middletown, Ohio. She is the daughter of Ralph (Jimmy) and Jody Cole. Sister to Dallas, Dyllan and Ellie. She and her family have been our close friends for many years. We have watched Mattie grow up from a tiny toddler into a fine, young lady. Mattie is always smiling, active in the community, adventurous and caring. She has participated in sports over the years at Madison including cheerleading.  She enjoys youth group at her hometown church. Over the summer of 2018, Mattie developed right sided hip pain. She initially thought she had tweaked her back or maybe developed some typical growing pains. As any healthy 16 year old, she took some tylenol/motrin and went on with her normal routine. She was a bit reluctant to complain too much because she knew she and her family did not have insurance and worried about the cost of seeking medical attention. As time passed the pain progressed and became unbearable. It began to alter her appetite, sleep and abilities to maintain her normal life.  She developed fevers and knew that whatever was going on was more than just growing pains.  The pain would no longer respond to over the counter medication. At this point she had to reach out for help. Just after New Year's 2019 Mattie was diagnosed with a bone mass in her hip at Children's Hospital of Cincinnati. Plain films were followed by MRI and bone biopsy. Thankfully she was placed on prescription pain medication and received some relief. On the date of 1/8/2019 Mattie and her family received the biopsy results. She was told she has Ewing's Sarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. Although further testing is required to determine the degree of involvement, she was informed she would need aggressive chemotherapy, radiation, and possibly surgery. Needless to say family, friends, community are devastated. Mattie, however, has stayed strong. She told her family she already worked it out with God, things would be ok. She will have a long journey ahead of her. Children's Hospital social service department is working with the family to help cover medical costs. Outside the health care costs the family will face loss of wages for missed work, travel expenses, meals away from home, medications.
