Help Rebuild and Expand the Historic MBAD Museum!

Donation protected

The demolition of the vibrant and historic MBAD corner building marks the beginning of a new chapter for the MBAD African Bead Museum.

With your incredible support and solidarity, we are ready to embark on the Rebuild phase of our project, bringing our carefully developed engineering plans to life after the completion of phase 1 renovations which took place in 2019 which launched the new Gallery and Community Space

Our goal is to rebuild the MBAD African Bead Museum and expand its grounds, to create a dedicated space for Dabls' exceptional and extensive collection of African artifacts. Your contribution will help ensure these invaluable pieces have a permanent home where they can be preserved, displayed, and appreciated.

Join us in bringing this important cultural space to life, making it a vibrant venue for African-based exhibitions and arts education programs for local children and community groups. The new building will also provide a fresh canvas for Dabls and the community to create new murals, continuing the tradition of the vibrant and culturally relevant art we all cherish.

Rebuild Goals:
* Reconstruction and Expansion: Rebuilding the museum to create a functional and inspiring venue for exhibitions and educational programs.
* Programmable Public Space: Developing an enclosed area for gatherings, exhibitions, school tours, and educational workshops.
* Visiting Artist Residence: Establishing a dedicated space for visiting artists, fostering creativity and cultural exchange.
* Expanded Administration Space: Creating additional space for a larger museum administration team, enhancing our operations and allowing us to better serve the community.

The MBAD African Bead Museum is uniquely positioned as a cultural institution deeply rooted in our neighborhood. This expansion will serve as a cultural anchor, connecting Detroit’s booming Downtown and Midtown to the West Side, including Artist Village, The Redford Theatre, and The University of Detroit, Mercy.
Our vision is to build an integenerational art program designed to increase connectivity across cultures and generations through storytelling and cultural memory sharing. By creating a viable museum space, we will be able to better serve our community and preserve our cultural heritage.
