Support McKinleyville's Washington Park 2nd Pickleball Court

Tax deductible
Imagine not having one, but TWO free outdoor pickleball courts right here in McKinleyville, California!! The Humboldt Bay Pickleball Club (HBPC) is organizing a campaign to make this a reality- and we need your help!

We're raising funds to build a second pickleball court alongside the already-funded one at the brand new Washington Park, soon to be constructed in a vacant lot on the north side of School Road (between Highway 101 and Central Avenue). Please refer to the image above for the location (circled in blue). With the pickleball interest booming in our Humboldt community, this is the perfect opportunity to ensure players of all ages have more space to play, connect, and enjoy the game we love!

However, this opportunity is short-lived and the timing is now!

The fundraising campaign for this second court has two phases. Phase 1 is to raise $10,000 to demonstrate community support for the court to be built this year alongside the first court. If this amount can be raised by April 14th, a second phase of fundraising will be initiate to fully fund the court, likely costing about $26,500 in total.

These new pickleball courts will serve as a hub for healthy activity, social interaction for all ages, and a place for developing new friendships on and off the courts.

About Us

HBPC is a non-profit organization (501c3 status) dedicated to promoting the sport of pickleball here in our community. Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality facilities where people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the game. Through organized events, training programs, and open play times, we strive to foster a love for pickleball and an active lifestyle among our members and the community at large.

The Need for New Courts

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States for the last several years, and it is expected that the need for new courts will continue to grow in Humboldt County and the nation. McKinleyville area is way behind the curve, as there are currently no outdoor courts. The nearest dedicated outdoor courts are the three new courts at Carlson Park, off Giuntoli Lane in north Arcata. These courts are seeing incredible demand for outdoor play, with more players and longer wait times . It is very likely that this one new court at Washington Park will receive even greater use and wait times by the many pickleball players. A true outdoor pickleball court facility with two courts is very much needed in the fastest growing community in our county. To address this issue and accommodate the growing need, the HBPC is supporting MCSD to add an additional second court through this funding drive. MCSD has an approved plan and funds to build one pickleball court. If the funding goal is not reached, the funds that are raised would be applied toward modifications to the existing contract to increase the height of court fencing, windscreen and other court improvements. The Recreation Dept said that if additional funds were able to be raised with private donations that they would be able to coordinate with the contractor to add a second court adjacent to it.

At this time there are no outdoor courts in McKinleyville area. As the sport has grown in popularity so has the wait time to rotate onto courts in our other outdoor courts in northern Humboldt.

Project Details
  • Location: Washington Park on School Road in McKinleyville (currently a vacant lot on north side of School Road)
  • Number of Courts: Hopefully two. MCSD only has funds for one court, but have the ability to add a second court next to it that would be constructed at the same time this year
  • Estimated Cost: $26,500
  • Timeline: Construction is being planned for the new Washington Park in mid-April 2025. The park development also includes a BMX track, playground, restroom and other improvements.

Benefits to the McKinleyville Community

  • Health and Wellness: Encouraging physical activity and providing a fun way for people to stay fit.
  • Social Interaction: Offering a space for people to meet, socialize, and build friendships.
  • Youth Engagement: Providing a safe and positive enviroment for young people to learn and play.
  • Community Events: Hosting tournaments, clinics, and events that bring people together.

How You Can Help

Pickleball is a super fun activity for a wide range of ages. It is anticipated that the one court will not be adequate to meet the needs of players in the McKinleyville community, that will result in longer wait times or not being able to play. Please help support in any way that you can.
