Support Meghan and Hank's Home Recovery

Meghan Hovdey is one of the most wonderful and caring people anyone will ever meet. She gives endlessly of herself without any thought of reward. Her sweet smile and laughter instantly light up any room she walks into. As a Homicide Detective for the San Diego Police Department, she spends her days tirelessly working to solve some of San Diego’s most violent and heinous crimes to help bring justice to the victims and their families. Simply put, Meghan is the kind of person ANYONE would want to be around.

Now, Meghan desperately needs OUR help.

One morning in October 2024, Meghan was preparing to leave for work when she noticed a small pool of standing water near the edge of her house. As Meghan inspected further, she quickly discovered the entire underside of her house was completely flooded with approximately ten inches of water. Panicked, Meghan rapidly worked to arrange for the water to be drained and any potential damage identified. It was later discovered that a pin-sized hole in a copper pipe beneath her house was the culprit, and what began as a gradual water leak had slowly grown into a massive pool. After multiple out-of-pocket expenses to repair the piping and drain the water from the foundation, Meghan soon learned that mold growth had spread throughout the entire sub-flooring of her home because of the water damage. The mold has since spread to the interior of her home, affecting her furniture, clothing, textiles, and many other personal effects. As a result, Meghan will be forced to replace nearly EVERYTHING inside her home, including items such as her bed, couches, dining room table, clothing, and many others. Meghan’s home has become unlivable and will force her and her elderly dog, Hank, to be displaced for an unknown length of time while home repairs and restoration take place, new hardwood flooring is installed, the subfloor is treated, and new furniture is delivered.

While Meghan immediately filed a claim through her homeowner’s insurance, she was told her claim would be denied on the grounds that a definitive timeframe for the leak could not be established. As a result, Meghan will likely incur cumulative repair and restoration costs in excess of $50,000. And while Meghan has done her very best to maintain a positive outlook during this difficult time, her nightmare is far from over. Following these repairs and replacements, Meghan will require follow-up medical visits for health hazards related to mold exposure as well as frequent and regular home inspections to ensure the mold growth has not continued to develop.

This catastrophe has taken a tremendous physical, emotional, and financial toll on Meghan. The repairs and substantial costs have consumed her everyday life, forcing her to take time away from work to be present for numerous repairs, consultations, and inspections. Our goal is to help Meghan raise enough funds so she can pay for and implement the necessary repairs to help her return her home to its proper livable condition. Thank you very much in advance for your kindness and generosity.

Sincerely,
