In the aftermath of the Genocide, the Mekelle Boarding School for the
Blind stands as a beacon of hope for visually impaired children, offering a lifeline
through education and support. Currently serving 135 visually impaired students
from all corners of the region, the school is facing unprecedented
challenges that demand our immediate attention and collective action.
The school's mission is to empower visually impaired students by providing not
only education but also a nurturing environment that addresses their unique
needs. However, the devastating impact of the war has resulted in a surge in
admissions (particularly among first grade entrants), stretching the school
beyond its capacity. These children, already facing the daily challenges of visual
impairment, are now confronted with the harsh realities of conflict, displacement,
and uncertainty.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, BBT has committed funds to cover the
budget shortfall for room and board for all 135 students for the next two months,
offering a crucial lifeline to these students in need. However, the scale of the
crisis requires a sustained effort to secure funds for the next six months, ensuring
stability until the end of the current school year and beyond. Financial assistance
is vital not only for immediate necessities such as food, housing, and school
materials but also to establish a self-sufficient, sustainable institutional model that
guards against service interruptions and chronic budget shortfalls.
Beyond the immediate challenges, the school is grappling with the malfunction of
its well water source, leaving the students without access to potable water. This
exacerbates the difficulties faced by visually impaired students, who already
navigate the world with unique obstacles. Your support can help address this
pressing issue, providing a basic necessity that is fundamental to the well-being
of these children.
Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, especially for those with visual
impairments who often face societal barriers. The Mekelle Boarding School for
the Blind plays a crucial role in breaking down these barriers, offering a
supportive learning environment tailored to the needs of visually impaired
students. Your contribution will not only ensure that these children receive quality
education but will also pave the way for a brighter future, empowering them to
overcome challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As we rally together to support the Mekelle Boarding School for the Blind, let us
remember that every donation, no matter the size, has the power to make a
significant impact on the lives of these students. Your generosity will resonate far
beyond the walls of the school, creating a ripple effect of positive change that
extends into the broader community.
We appeal to your compassion and sense of justice to join us in this critical
mission. By supporting the Mekelle Boarding School for the Blind, you are not
just providing financial assistance; you are investing in the future of the
visually impaired children, offering them a chance for a better life through
education, food, and shelter. Together, let us be the guiding light that ensures
these students in need receive the support they deserve on their journey towards
a brighter and more promising future. #TigrayInNeed #SupportEducation
